We want all pet owners to be aware of the dangers some over the counter medications can cause pets, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. While it may seem logical that these medications can benefit your pet, the opposite is actually true. Many of these products can be harmful or even fatal to your dog or cat.
Never give your pets pain medications, even something that seems as innocuous as a tylenol. These products contain acetaminophen, which is toxic to pets and can even cause death. This includes products like Advil, Aleve, and Motrin.
Only give your pet medications that were designed for animals and that were given to you by a veterinarian for specific purposes. It is also important to adhere to any guidelines a veterinarian gives with the medication.
There are other over the counter medications and products that are harmful to pets. Avoid giving your pets eye drops, even if it seems like they have dry eyes. Also avoid using hydrogen peroxide on wounds, as well as alcohol based medicines.
Also avoid shampoos, lotions, and other topical applicants that were not designed for animals. These products are made for human skin, and can damage your pet’s epidermis and coat. It may go without saying, but also never give your pet any sort of anti-depressant medication.
If you have any questions about what products are safe for your pet, please contact us today. We would be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have.
